Sorry for second tread from curious newcomer: Will Stalin's health play any role in the Endgame?

Until now he has been described as strong as a steel in RG books, but still he is 68 and after 4 very challenging WWII years. If I remember well something I noted elsewhere long ago, Stalin was as exhausted as Churchill and spent most of 1946 recuperating in Crimea. Do you plan to keep him unwavering or should we expect a more frail Stalin?

That was something I pondered long and hard, but decided that he had to remain strong and decidedly in charge at all times. From my research, and bear in mind info was well guarded during those times, he did not apparently suffer from any specific health issue [that doesn't mean that he didn't of course] but did spend more time at his dacha in Moscow and, as you say, away on the Black Sea. To bring about a proper and fitting end to RG, I think we would all prefer and fit and active Stalin to face the results of his scheming and brutality, so this is what I have contrived. No sickness, no lack of drive, nothing but his continued iron will.

You are right - I am sure I will enjoy your "iron" Stalin in the Endgame as well as I did while reading the previous books. It is same as with chain-smoking Eisenhower. There are plenty references to his smoking habits in various biographies, but before RG I didn't thought much about :)

BTW, your reply has driven me to quick search in my library. It seems that Stalin spent in 1945, '46 and '47 each several months relaxing in region of Sochi (the Black Sea area, but not Crimea - mea culpa), but it wouldn't matter in RG since during the war - as you are saying - Stalin tended to stay in his dachas around Moscow.

While Simon Sebag Montefiore (Stalin: Court of the Red Czar) states that "some time between 9 and 15 October (1945), Stalin suffered a serious heart attack", it should be noted that russian authors (like Oleg Khlevniuk) are more restrained in statements about Stalin's heath problems.

Yep, I followed suit and said Crimea, whereas I already have cited Sochi as where he had a home. if you remember, Nazarbayeva used it. I was criticised for having Eisenhower smoke so much lol
